  • Annual: Veterans Day Seminar
Friends sponsors an annual CLE, bringing in nationally-recognized speakers on areas of relevance to trial lawyers and those providing representation to the indigent accused. This seminar serves as Friends’ largest fundraising effort of the year. Past presenters include Larry Pozner, Cynthia Roseberry, Jeff Robinson, and Dean Strang. View 2019 seminar information (in PDF format). Friends works closely with the Hamilton County Public Defender’s office to identify attorneys who might benefit from scholarship and training assistance by planning seminars, trainings and presentations to assist the lawyers who represent the poor in our community.
  • Book Talk: Usual Cruelty
Social OTR (1819 Elm St., Cincinnati, OH) Alec Karakatsanis, a nationally recognized civil rights lawyer and founder of Civil Rights Corps, discussed his work and his new book Usual Cruelty with Dr. Zaria Davis of the Pretrial Justice Institute. Attendees learned about his work upending unconstitutional money bail systems in municipalities around the country and for a broader discussion of how lawyers and activists can help end wealth-based detention and mass incarceration in America. Proceeds from book sales at the event supported Friends to the Indigent.
